The Tūī is probably the bird I've painted most, nine pieces now and counting. There's a reason for that. That dark iridescent plumage that shifts from green to purple to black depending on the light. The white throat feathers. The song, which is unlike anything else in the bush.
The Tūī is Wellington's bird as much as anywhere, and it shows up in the garden most mornings to remind you of that. I've painted the Tūī in watercolour, in mixed media with stencil, in botanicals, large format and small. Each one finds something a little different in the same bird. That's the thing about the Tūī — it rewards attention.
